UBCO Student Starts GoFundMe for Tuition
April 6th, 2018
GoFundMe has a variety of ideas that you can fund. UBCO’s own Hugo Castellanos has created a GoFundMe in order to pay off his tuition.
Hugo is a 24-year-old from Guatemala City and is in his first year of psychology.
Unfortunately, Hugo’s tuition money had to be spent on medical bills and funeral costs for a member of his family. While this is not his first attempt at getting money, it is one of the last.
He attempted to get emergency money from the school but was denied. It is also no surprise that he was denied a bank loan here in Canada, as he is young with no credit score and could not get one in Guatemala because he was living in Canada, which qualified him as a “fraud risk.”
Hugo has raised $405 and has until the last week of July to raise $30,000. The UBCO Billiards Club is helping out Hugo, as a member, by hosting a tournament on March 31st. A $10 eight ball tournament with the proceeds going to help international student tuitions.
While it is not a conventional way to pay off tuition, for Hugo, it has come down to raising the money or leaving Canada.
