Assassins, Bears, Evil Robots and More at E3
6/18/10
The Electronic Entertainment Expo (also known as E3) has hosted a wide variety of mouth-watering game trailers and demos for the upcoming months of 2010.
Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood has an intense and breathtaking cinematic trailer which will blow the controllers out of gamer’s hands everywhere, and Mickey Mouse will soon have his own game in Epic Mickey, where players can erase the walls and ceiling of in-game environments with paint thinner.
Additionally there are about three different Star Wars games that are scheduled for release in the next year or so. Classic series were represented with new sequels, like Halo Reach, Metal Gear Solid Rising, and Final Fantasy XIV . Such a wide variety of titles means E3 has something for everyone–and a lot of the preview footage this year looks absolutely marvellous.
There are several original titles which look exceedingly promising, one of which is codenamed Project Dust. The trailer, made entirely out of in-game footage, is full of potential. It hints at the story of primal human beings in a world filled with natural catastrophes, such as volcanic eruptions and floods. The player’s job is to act as God and help their mask-wearing ancestors survive in an environment that would make the creators of 2012 jealous. It looks surprisingly indepthful and promising – the primal humans are spiritual, relatable and convincing, which is something characters in similar games like Black & White and Spore lacked.
There is another game which stood out from the hordes of products at E3. Naughty Bear, published by 505 Games will turn some heads. As a completely new title, it will either be absolutely horrific or fresh and amusing. You play as a giant teddy bear wreaking havoc on your fellow bears. The graphics are quite adorable, but this naughty bear means business. Players cause death and destruction in order to gain as many ‘naughty points’ as possible. You can do anything from break windows, commit arson, or even trap your neighbour’s legs with bear traps and break their necks for maximum chaos. It's only rated 12+ by PEGI; pah, murder–it’s like picking strawberries.
More anticipated titles were debuted at E3, with gamers going wild over all sorts of upcoming releases. One of the greater sources mass fanboy squeals was of Portal 2’s appearance, accompanied by a demo. GLaDOS, the renowned villain from the original Portal, is still alive, and she hasn’t lost her passive-aggressive humour and murderous distaste for you. Near the beginning of the game, the player stumbles upon a pile of wreckage that reconstructs itself from the roof. It is the new GLaDOS, and she stares at you while she hangs half-reconstructed from the ceiling.
“Oh. It’s you,” GLaDOS says dejectedly. “It’s been a long time. How have you been? I have been really busy being dead – you know, after you MURDERED me.”
The voice acting is as outstanding as it was in the first game, and many gamers will not want to miss the chance to continue the creative dialogue Portal was so famous for. Feel free to check out the demo footage, posted by IGN Entertainment on Youtube:
